The Institute for Foreign Languages

THE INSTITUTE FOR FOREIGN LANGUAGES

UBT has establilshed the Institute of Foreign Languages, along with the institutional development and the new requirements for trainings and certificates in foreign languages skills. Since the interest for learning a foreign language has increased throughout the years in Europe, the European Council created the Common European Framework for teaching, learning and evaluation of foreign languages. What is more, psychosocial studies show that being able to speak two or more languages is a great treasure for people to develop their careers. People who know more than one language are active in more environments at school, work, or anywhere else, differently from monolingual people. These differences are favorable in many respects. However, there is always space for all those who want to get started with learning a language and reach the same fluency levels as a solid speaker of the same language, and ultimately to have the same benefits.

“Foreign languages and Internationalization at UBT”
Based on the motto ‘United in diversity’, the European Union considers language learning a priority as part of its efforts to promote mobility and intercultural understanding. Multilingualism is a vital aspect of the EU’s competitiveness and there are numerous programmes and projects in this area. Consequently, the European Language Policy strongly encouragesevery citizen to master two languages in addition to their mother tongue (2+1).

UBT believes that linguistic and cultural expertise is a fundamental skill for enhancing educational and employment prospects. Our college is therefore committed to supporting its students, Kosovar and international, in achieving genuine plurilingualism through in-depth knowledge of different foreign languages and cultures. This knowledge is both a general competence, measurable and comparable through the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), as well as sector-specific, closely related to the different study programmes. We consider it essential for example for taking part in Erasmus+ and other mobility programmes or internships abroad.

At UBT, the language of instruction is generally Albanian; as part of our internationalisation strategy our goal is to offer an increasing number of lessons using the content-and-language-integrated learning approach (CLIL); having numerous international partnerships, our visiting professors lecture usually in English. Integral part of our study programmes arecustomised English, German, Italian and Albanian L2 classes at various levels; these courses may be curricular or extracurricular.

Within this framework the ‘Instituti e Gjuhëve të Huaja’ (Institute for Foreign Languages) hosts international language certification examinations for anyone who wishes to take them.
